Wakefield Schools Foundation Programs

Band Camp

Given this opportunity, prospective rising 6th graders attending Wakefield Middle School can begin developing some of the fundamental skills on their instrument prior to the start of the school year. The hope is this can function to alleviate some of the pressures with starting musicians at the middle school level. This day camp will allow the middle school director as well as the WHS Band Program and other musical professionals to spend time refining skills with students in the hope that students progress at a more rapid pace.  This camp excites and educates young potential musicians as they get ready to enter the middle school music program.

Recorder Band

Every 4th and 5th grade student at Wakefield Elementary School are given a recorder.  This instrument becomes the vehicle through which students develop foundational music skills that translate directly to other settings. The elementary students work on music during music class as well as with WHS band/orchestra students that correlates with predetermined music to be played by the high school band. The goal is for the work to culminate in a performance opportunity for the WES students with the WHS concert band. This will provide a chance not only for these young students to perform, expressing their creativity, but also build a lasting relationship with the instrumental performing arts programs at the high school level.

Joint Concerts

The Wakefield Middle School 8th grade band and orchestra students and 5th grade Wakefield Elementary students are given music that correlates with the Wakefield High School band and orchestra.  They work with the WHS band director and high school students to rehearse which will also provide opportunities for rising 9th graders to develop relationships with the high school band students and director as well as spend time on the campus prior to the start of their high school year.  Additionally this collaboration provides the high school students with mentorship opportunities and experience.  You won't want to miss this spectacular showcase!

Instruments

There is a growing need to provide instruments for students who otherwise have no means of obtaining one on their own. Our desire is to work with a local instrument vendor to purchase wind/orchestra instruments that can be used at the middle and high school levels as rentals and/or in the classroom for those students. This would work towards fulfilling our goal of not allowing money to be the reason any student is unable to have an instrumental music education experience.

Instrument Specialist

Brining in specialist for specific instruments gives students the opportunity to learn in small groups from instructors dedicated to just those instruments. This is an exciting and fun way to deeper enrich students education in the instruments of their choice.
